overhead, sideclubs, and blackbelt test oh my

Well, I sparred I won none of my matches, but that's okay. Was doing it for preporation for the test. One thing is with the blackbelt test, I might be able to use foot traps more.

Weapons class, was well, interesting, we went through all the material tonight. Me and Bruce, I dropped my bo staff, and did the pushups. Two of the forms didn't feel to go.

Empty hand, we did side clubs, and overheads, then we were supposed to do them backwards. That was interesting. Then we did this thing where everyone attacked you from two different angles. Then we did it with blindfolded. Then we were going to do it with just kicks.

Me and Travis grappled, I kept pulling away from him when he grabbed me so it was hard for him to pin me.

4 and 5 pinion

Well, I helped someone before class today on plum tree blocking system, statue of the crane, and some kempos. One of the kempo's I know, he would like to have, but I don't want to give too him since I don't work with him. But hopefully I was able to help him.

Class today was interesting. I worked with the green-brown belts. First I worked with them on five pinion. Then we worked some other forms. Then I had the more advanced green-brown belts work together, while I worked with a new one. Then had that one work on what I had taught him, while I worked with the others. Two of them were working together, on the form. I thought he had but alas.

Then we did tiger rolls. One problem is that the kids might try and step over them. I think the idea is too jump over the person rolling at you then do a roll. Because if you try and step over the person you might trip.

interesting idea

I was thinking to bad you couldn't use a steering wheel for martial arts training. Kind of like a wing chun dummy. Oh I suppose you could put some prongs on it, to simulate arms.

hand strikes and kicks

I helped someone before class on one pinion. Even though it was a basic form. It still helps me.

Josh had the wavemasters out before class. We went through some of the stretches. Then we started working on the bags. We did a whole bunch of kicks. I thought it was a good work out.

focus

Sparring
What I did alot of was foot traps when some kicks. I was trying to fake other people out.

We did a few laps of running with escrima sticks, twirling them around. Then we did jumping jacks. We had to do them over. Then we did a drill where we paired off and each person had there back turned to the other person. Then we would run up and see who was the fastest.

Then we worked on siliwali's, in a gauntlet. Then me and Bruce paired off and did some of the higher ones. Then we worked on bo staff forms. Then we split off into groups.

What got me made was lack of focus. Maybe it didn't show it. The weapons class is a special class. We only have some much time a week to practice.

Leopard

What I read was about the leopard.

I checked someone for a stripe during the class. One thing I told him, is "You have it here." Pointing to his head, "But do you have it here." Pointing to his heart. I gave him a stripe though but I told the next I check material I want it faster.

Then I worked on the plum tree blocking system with two people. I hoped it helped them understand it. Then I worked with two more people on it.

built in groin protection

I was thinking the other day, instead of having to wear a cup, why don't they just sow it into the gi? It would make more sense then having to put it on, and off. You could have a pouch, in the gi, and the cup could more wrap around the groin.

philosophy

I once saw an show on the navy seals. One of the seals was talking about there fighting philosophy. In it he explained fighting how they trained gave them an edge in combat.

Awhile back I was watching, a dvd's on native american fighting arts by randall brown. He explained that the arts of hunting, fishing, etc,. were interchangeable with the fighting arts. He went on to explain, that they fought to live.

Now most of us are not navy seals. Most of us are not native americans either. But I think, making someone fight your fight is good strategy. If you have to fight, then you want to do it with all your heart. You want to do it with things your familiar with.

easter

Well, since it was easter we did a bunch of easter games for class today. One where you could knock the egg out off a dish of another person, race down with your eggs in a dish, throwing the egg across the room, etc. Also had it where the kids got to go looking for easter eggs. While they were doing that we did other things, like throught grab. Then later we did an egg toss, and worked up to larger and heavier balls.

kicking drill

We didn't do any laps in class, instead we started off in a kicking drill. With various ways to kick. What I thought was interesting was a tapping then throwing a roundhouse.

Then we did the kicking drill, both the intermediate, and the advanced one. Well, I think it's advanced. Anyway, then we went into a gauntlet and did combinations with takedowns. I think it was a good review.

wavemaster top

I worked with a white belt before class on some of the techniques. He was having trouble distingushing between 6 combination, and the first tiger technique. Hopefully it helped that I explained they are used for different things.

So class started and I led the class out with two laps. One person lead the class through stretching, another did some hand strikes. We kind of got into some leapord walking, which I kind of think of as horse trotting. Then I did an orange belt kicking drill. But I did it real slowly to emphasis balance. Then did some kicks. One person was shooting there back kick low, so I put a wavemaster top behind them so they would have to kick over it. I hope they didn't feel embarrased.

Then I was assigned to work with someone. We went over some of lapel grabs. Had trouble with one because I wasn't rotating enough. Another one I didn't have, but oh well. Then we brown belts broke off and worked on the ten point blocking system. Then me and another person worked on some of the upper forms, and blocking systems. So all and all it was good workout.

uphill

I hid on the hill. I guess the other instructors didn't know what I was up too, so that was kind of confusing. But it was surprising. One of them didn't know I was up there. So the kids run up the hill I did an overhead, another instructor had them do a sideclub, and then another did a kempo punch technique. I think it was a great workout.

Then we went on the grassy part above the studio, and worked on forms. I checked stripes. Then it was game time.

tonfa form

No one wanted to spar so I practiced doing bo staff stuff with another person. Also some people got the crash mat out and people were trying out different jumps.

We started out with escrima sticks, and practiced some different counts. Then we practiced rotating while doing the footwork, which was tricky. Then we went back to just doing the counts and rotating.

Then I got out my tonfa form and went over that a few times. Then went over the sai form. Worked with a few poeple on it.

In empty hand class we did the laps, then did some combinations for a warmup. Then we each did a stretch. Then we went through a kicking drill. Then Jim showed off a sequence and we paired off and worked on it. Then each pair demonstrated it too the group.

Crane

I read another short extert from Grandmaster Villari's book. This time on the crane. I hope some of this is helping sink in.

So we had them do a few punches along with one pinion for the warm-up with the jumping jacks, pushups, situps, and laps. Then we hat the thought of the week. Then we divided up. I worked checked stripes. I worked with a few who weren't up for a stripe because so they would be ready for the next time. Then worked with two kids on the plum tree blocking system. That is going to need more work. But hopefully soon they will get it.

For the "game" we did it where the kids would have to jump over a bunch of mats. I did a diving front roll and noticed a little pain but nothing that big. I guess I'm going to have to learn to do them differently.

stretches

We did alot of stretches today, since there was a white belt in class, but I think it was good for me too. I was the highest belt in class so it was interesting. Then we worked on the one of the lockflow's. It was interesting, to work on it. Then we did some kicks over wavemaster tops.

back to three classes a day

Went too sparring, this time we spare with wavemasters with there tops off. Which was interesting, then we sparred in tandom. I didn't do so hot, but everytime I go I learn a little something.

Brad is taking over the weapons class now. He had us run around with escrima sticks. Weapons class we went through the form, then we would do it too the back wall. I worked on my upper forms for a little bit. Then worked with another person, on lower bo staff form. Then worked sai's with him. Hoped it helped.

In the empty hand class, we did laps in the figure eights. Then we did a bunch of kicks and strikes. Then we got out the blockers, and practiced blocking throwing kicks out. Then later we split up into sections and the upper belts worked with the lower belts. Then there was an obstacle course thing. You would have to get over the wall, do a roll, do a combination, then jump over a wavemaster, kicks and punches on a blocker.
